DANNY KRIVIT Live DJ Set from SHELTER TUESDAYS 1993
feat. MINI-BALL MC'd by the legendary Moi Renee on Twitch
@ twitch.tv/dannykrivit
Back by popular demand...
Another SHELTER TUESDAYS tape, this one from 1/5/93...
a SHELTER TUESDAY MINI-BALL, MC'd by the legendary MOI RENEE.
Understanding the Evolution Of Legendary TRACKS TUESDAY Party, (531 W. 19th St. NYC), a very important & underrated NY club, from 1985-1993 every Tuesday for a mostly young gay urban crowd of 2000 devoted followers. Home of The HOUSE OF XTRAVAGANZA & voguing capital of the world, With David Depino (main floor) & Danny Krivit upstairs as DJ/VJ/light man. Recording my sets on HiFi VHS tapes that 30 years later sound remarkably great. TRACKS changed hands a number of times, but TUESDAY TRACKS parties paid the rent & remained.1990 changing to "Kiimanjaro", then "Anything Goes", & "Strutts". In 1993 the Original Shelter opened its doors to us for SHELTER TUESDAYS. Finally endeing up at Sound Factory Bar & stayed there on Saturdays & Sundays through 1995. I recorded a lot of tapes over those years.
THIS SUNDAY's tape is another solid 3+hr classic house set from 'Shelter Tuesdays' party 1993... No video @ Shelter... so the visuals are borrowed from previous Tracks tapes & my massive video collection of voguing, fashion runway, dancing, with loads of great special effects,
looking forward to sharing it with you, Danny 🙂
Thank you for your love & support.

Sunday, February 7th, 2021 1pm (EST) I'll be re-showing "Danny Krivit Live DJ/VJ Set from TRACKS, NYC 1990 + Voguing/Runway Visuals" (2 Hrs & 40 min) on Twitch @ twitch.tv/dannykrivit
My 1st time broadcasting at 1pm (EST), specifically for my friends in Europe. I'll be reshowing this 2hr Garage & House Classics tape from my archives, Loaded with unique Voguing & Runway Visuals.
Originally recorded in 1990 on Hi-Fi VHS at the legendary TRACKS, 531 W. 19th St. NYC. From 1985-1993 every Tue, for a crowd of 2000, mostly gay young urban male devoted followers. At the time arguably the voguing capital of the world. With David Depino turning out the main floor, upstairs I was DJ/VJ/light man. With 3 giant video screens covering the dance floor, it could be quite intense. I made specially edited composites of voguing, fashion runway, soul train line, all kinds of dancing, ect. TRACKS had state of the art video equipment & loads of special effects, layering, patterns, extreme painting & colorization. I worked my visuals as a mood controling wallpaper-light show, a very important part of my sets. so besides showing up with crates of vinyl records, I also had a crate of composite visuals for my weekly Tues & Fri. 5pm-5am DJ sets. treasured times. looking forward to sharing it with you this Sunday at 1pm (EST), Danny 🙂

I'll be showing a "Danny Krivit DJ Set of,
Garage & Loft Classics From Sound Factory Bar, NYC 1994 (2.5 hours)"
In 1993 together with David Depino & Charles Jackson, we moved our very successful TRACKS parties to Saturdays & Sundays at SOUND FACTORY BAR... (aka SFB). David Depino in the main room & me downstairs in the lounge, which now focussed on Hip-Hop, + a little R&B, Reggae, & Classics. In 1994 I started doing a Classic Party on Sundays in the main room, focusing on music of the Garage & Loft... it was a huge success.
This is one of those SFB tapes.
Looking forward to sharing it with you, Danny :)

Remembering Whitney Houston... her amazing voice could make just about anything sound spectacular, hard to believe there were only 2 songs of hers I would pump in the club... The David Morales RMX of "Love Saves The Day" & Yvonne Turner RMX of "I'm Your Baby Tonight"... I do play them a lot, but wish there were more.
In 1985 I had just started a residency at a performance club on the upper west side at a place called Sweetwaters. My first night I would play music after that night's featured performer, Cissy Houston, who I liked & was very familiar with, but this was also the debut of her daughter, Whitney Houston. That was an unforgettable night & I became an instant fan.
For Body & Soul's MLK celebration I had the opportunity to play my edit of Yvonne Turner's fabulous remix of I'm Your Baby Tonight... & now finally released this past week on Bandcamp, enjoy, Danny Krivit :

Syreeta "Can't Shake Your Love"...
always loved this song, especially when I heard it in the Garage, as Larry had a special remix, he had done that he apparently never shared with anyone & I never heard it anywhere else. When The Garage finally closed I never heard it again... until one day a few years later.
Before A-1 records, the owner, Isaac used to sell records at the 26th st & 6th ave flea market every weekend & I got to know him pretty well. I would get there very early before the sun was up & was still dark, & the record dealers were just unloading to set up for the day. This day Isaac said to me "I think I got a really nice collection today, I think you'll be very happy". He probably had about 75 milk crates of records & it took me a couple of hours to go through them all. Luckily, I was there that early & I got my clear pick of things. It was a very good group, so I ended up taking home about 2 crates of some great tittles. As I was getting to the end, I found an acetate just tittle Can't Shake Your Love Remix, It looked like the one I would see Larry play, so I got a bit exited. There was no place to hear records beforehand... but they were a buck a piece!... so you know I bought it. As I looked through everything again before I paid for them, it really started to sink in that this was no random group or records... these were some of Larry Levan's records. What clinched it was 2 white label promo's of "Bounce, Rock, Skate, Roll" signed to Larry Levan on the jacket. Larry didn't play that song that much... so they were mint.
When I got home, I went right to the "Can't Shake Your Love". That's when I finally got to see it in the light... it was in awful shape, there was a clear footprint on it, & it skipped in several places. It's very difficult to really clean an acetate properly, but right away I could tell this was Larry's remix. So I just lightly dusted it off & recorded it before it got any more damage. Like I said, it skipped in several places, so I needed to edit the skips & pops out, it actually turned out quite well.
I ran in to Larry a short while after that & I mentioned to him that I think I bought about 2 crates of his records... he seemed quite uninterested, as in the end he had a lot of his records all over the place, at different people’s houses, some people that weren't really that close to him. But when I mentioned that I found the Syreeta, he got very excited & said "I gotta have that back"! We were close friends, so I said "sure... but the acetate is in awful shape, with an actual boot print on it & skips in several places". His smile dropped, & I said, "but I edited it back together pretty well & I could give it to you on reel". He was like "yes, I want that, but I also want the acetate too" I said no problem & gave it to him a few days later. That was the last time I saw him, as he passed away shortly after that. Wow, really miss him.
Like so many special versions of songs Larry had, I always remember this one standing out. In 2016 they reissued a CD of the original Lp with bonus tracks of Larry's remix, the sound quality was really good... but it still wasn't THAT mix. Back in the early 90's I gave my edit to a friend at JVS records & he put it out... even though the mastering was not great, it's still my favorite version.
My mother being a Jazz singer & father Chet Baker's manager certainly put Jazz very prominent in my musical upbringing. As a kid, I respected Jazz, but especially the traditional jazz my parents were into... was for me an acquired taste. My father's next venture "The Ninth Circle" started out as a bar/steak house, & I had a lot of odd jobs there as a kid. Like every other bar in NY at that time, they had a jukebox, & like every other bar was pre stuffed with the current top 40 pop music... with little variation, as you would suspect, it was pretty tiered.
Somehow my father learned of a record distributor on 10th ave. that could press a single copy of anything you want & put it on a 7" vinyl record for $10. It wasn't long before the jukebox was stuffed with 7"s that didn't exist anywhere else, a lot of album cuts & a lot of hot Jazz. This attracted a whole artist/musician scene, that probably didn't even realize how unique the jukebox was, it just had this unique atmosphere.
I had no clue at the time how much this music was influencing me... as my taste was still primarily rock n soul, which being in the heart of Greenwich Village, was literally all around me. By the end of the 60's, my best friend & class mate was Creed Taylor Jr, & While visiting his house, his father Creed Taylor Sr, who hadn't started CTI records yet, but was already making a lot of noise with his productions on the Impulse! ABC, & Verve labels. He had just renovated his 3 story brownstone into a combination home & full on recording studio.
When I came over with Creed Jr. after school, Creed Sr. made sure we had to meet some of his musicians that were hanging around in the foyer... Freddie Hubbard, hank Crawford, Ron Carter, & Stanley Turrentine. Me & Creed Jr. were just there to smoke pot in his room... & were pretty unfazed.
Towards the end of the 60's I actually started hearing a lot of Jazz I could finally get into, a lot of it on Creed Taylor's new CTI label. When I proudly showed my parents this new Jazz I had recently discovered... they winced & said "that's that fusion crap". But I really liked it, & there was one song I kept hearing in the Ninth Circle that really stuck with me, Les McCann & Eddie Harris "Compared To What". Like so much of the music of that time, the message was so relevant & still is today.
There was this great live version from the Montreux Jazz Festival, & The Ninth Circle actually had a full 8+ min ver. on a promo 7". Not what you would generally call a dance record... but it still very much made me groove & moved my soul in a big way It also really contributed to opening up my musical taste at just the right time. Les McCann & Eddie Harris had another collaboration I got into, but I more often was following Eddie Harris on his own. I really enjoyed a track of his called "Is It In", great groove... but the intro & outro was always a dance floor killer, so I finally straightened it out with an edit, hope you like it too, Danny
Like so many people, my first Betty Wright record I bought was Clean Up Woman, the same year I started DJing in 1971. It's hard to imagine now how few TV channels we had to choose from back then, but just flicking the channels by chance, I just happened to catch the 2nd half of this same performance of Betty Wright on the Mike Douglas show...
