Sunday, October 18, I'll be showing "Danny Krivit Live DJ/VJ Set from TRACKS, NYC 1992 + Voguing/Runway Visuals" (2 Hours) on Twitch @ twitch.tv/dannykrivit
TRACKS (NY) 1985-1993 was David Depino resident DJ on the main floor, which was massive, & I was resident DJ in the upstairs lounge, which was a decent size room. This was the time of video & MTV. Along with DJing 5 & 6 nights a week, I was also simultaneously VJing… but upstairs at TRACKS was very different. 3 sides of the dance floor were covered with giant video screens, & they had state of the art video equipment & special effect units. Rather then just show videos along with my DJing, I made specially edited composites of voguing, soul train line, & all kinds of dancing, & fashion runway. I recorded my DJ sets on 2hr hi-fi VHS tape, along with whatever I was showing on the screen with the recorded effects, & then play that tape, adding another layer of effects… this is one of those composite tapes. The crowd at TRACKS was also exceptional, they had great taste, knew their music, both new & old… & responded in a big way. Unlike the other clubs I was playing, the TRACKS crowd was up on it all, from the newest hip hop, deep house, Garage classics, to the newest video. The first few hours I would build up the anticipation using my massive video collection of rarities & special performances. Before internet, social media, & YouTube, unlike now, this all seemed very unique & special. The rest of the night I controlled my effected composite tapes like a light show, with blackouts & burst to follow the music peaks of the moment. So glad I can share a piece of it with you, Danny :)
